Famous Copyright Case To Learn From | Imitation Vs. Inspiration

Richard Prince, known for appropriating others’ work to create new meanings, used 41 images from photographer Patrick Cariou’s book for an exhibition at the Gagosian Gallery. Prince argued fair use, stating he transformed the photos to convey new meanings. However, Cariou claimed copyright infringement, arguing that the changes weren’t significant enough to qualify as fair use. In 2011, a judge ruled in favor of Cariou, stating the alterations didn’t create enough new meaning to be considered fair use.

You can be inspired but do not copy other people’s work. You have to make sure you are creating something original and not derivative.
