AFRICA UPDATE: Tanzania Introduces Mandatory Trademark Recordation System.

The Fair Competition Commission (FCC) of Tanzania has announced a new mandatory trademark rights recordation system for all goods imported into Mainland Tanzania, effective 1 December 2025.

Established under Section 11A of the Merchandise Marks Act, 1963 and the Merchandise Marks (Recordation) Regulations, 2025, this system aims to strengthen border protection and curb counterfeit trade.

Key Requirements:

  • All trademarks associated with imported goods (local or foreign) must be recorded with the Chief Inspector of Merchandise Marks.
  • Applicants must provide:
    • Certified copy of the current registration
    • Applicant and manufacturer details
    • Sample of trademarked goods
    • Prescribed fees

Failure to comply may result in border delays or detention of goods.Why It Matters:
