Qatar Enforces Strict Adherence to Nice Classification (11th Edition)

The Qatari Trademark Office has issued a new circular mandating full compliance with the 11th Edition of the Nice Classification for all trademark applications.

Under the updated rule, broad class headings or generic terms such as “all goods/services within class” will no longer be accepted. Applicants must now provide specific, itemized descriptions of goods and services according to the official Nice list.

This reform promotes greater clarity and legal certainty in trademark specifications, strengthens international alignment, and helps reduce disputes over scope of protection.

💡 What this means for brand owners:

  • Review upcoming filings for compliance
  • Avoid generic or class-heading descriptions
  • Update to the 11th Edition format before submission
