Following a temporary review suspension initiated on January 4, 2026, the Intellectual Property Office of Singapore (IPOS) officially resumed accepting new requests for its primary domestic acceleration frameworks—SG Patents Fast and SG Trade Marks Fast—effective September 1, 2026. Outlined in Patents Circular No. 5/2026 and Trade Marks Circular No. 3/2026, the reopening restores direct fast-track capabilities for rights holders seeking accelerated grant and registration timelines in the region.
The Current Framework: Key Operational Updates
The updated administrative and prosecution landscape at IPOS highlights several critical avenues for rights holders:
- Resumption of Domestic Fast Tracks: Effective September 1, 2026, eligible applicants can once again submit requests for expedited patent search and examination, as well as expedited trademark examination, restoring compression of filing-to-grant cycles.
- Patent Prosecution Highway (PPH): Applicants seeking fast-track prosecution without relying solely on domestic acceleration can leverage favorable search and examination work from over 30 partner offices (including the EPO, USPTO, and JPO) via the global PPH network.
- ASPEC Regional Synergy: Under the ASEAN Patent Examination Co-operation (ASPEC) framework, applicants filing across Southeast Asia can utilize examination results from participating regional IP offices to streamline examination in Singapore.
- Trademark Classification Efficiencies: Brand owners can expedite standard trademark processing and secure reduced filing fees—S$280 vs. S$410 per class—by selecting pre-approved terms directly from the IPOS Classification Database.
- Search & Examination Extension Relief: Parallel to the fast-track reopening, IPOS extended its Extension of Time (EOT) Pilot through August 31, 2027, allowing eligible patent applicants up to an additional 18 months to request search and/or examination without official fees when strategic timing is preferred over speed.
Actionable Prosecution Strategy for ASEAN Expansion
To maintain momentum and optimize IP protection budgets in Singapore, rights holders should execute the following steps:
- Evaluate Portfolio Acceleration Readiness: Assess pending Singapore patent applications where search and examination have not yet been requested, as well as new trademark filings, to utilize the reopened SG Fast channels.
- Utilize Pre-Approved Classification Lists: Build trademark specification lists strictly using terms from the IPOS database to lower filing fees and accelerate examination reports.
- Leverage Work-Sharing Networks: For cross-border patent portfolios, utilize foreign examination reports through PPH or ASPEC to reduce office actions and achieve higher grant rates efficiently.
- Align Commercial Timelines: Balance fast-track options against the fee-free EOT Pilot based on whether your immediate commercial goal demands rapid enforcement rights or strategic prosecution deferral.
