Famous Trademark Case to Learn From | ‘Blurred Lines’ Lawsuit: Thicke & Pharrell Ordered to Pay $5M

In a landmark 2018 case, Robin Thicke and Pharrell Williams were ordered to pay nearly $5M after their hit song ‘Blurred Lines’ was found to be too similar to Marvin Gaye’s ‘Got To Give It Up’.

While Williams defended the song, claiming it wasn’t direct plagiarism, Thicke admitted they were inspired by Gaye’s track.

The court acknowledged that both songs shared a similar mood, but differed in melody, harmony, and rhythm.
